Specs Review: For the price ($1200-$1300), the MSI GE70 Apache Pro is among the most affordable high-end gaming laptops on the market. It is a true gaming laptop, as it has 12GB RAM, i7 processor, and the new GTX860M graphics card, so you will almost never see it lag in a game setting. The laptop has good amount of storage space for a college student, but not spectacular for a gaming laptop. The wireless module is standard, and the screen is very large. The screen is perfect for people that are using this more as a desktop replacement, but might pose an issue for the on-the-go college student. Other issues include the small battery life and weight. 6 pounds is very heavy for a laptop, and will definitely contribute to back problems if you carry it everywhere. The battery is quite low for a college laptop, so unless you go back to your dorm often, or have power in-class, you should consider looking elsewhere. When gaming, the laptop may last as short as 2 hours.
Customer Review Summary (from online reviews):
- “Great Laptop.”
- “This laptop is a beast of a machine and can handle anything you throw at it.”
- “This thing runs HOT.”
- “Portability, Excellent Design, and Powerful”
Conclusion for College Students: The MSI GE70 Apache Pro is an absolute beast gaming laptop, with some issues. If you’re seriously into gaming, or plan to start gaming heavily, this laptop is definitely something to consider. You are sure to not run into any issues with running high-end games for years, and this plus doesn’t come with a high price tag. Yes, $1200 seems daunting, but compared to other gaming laptops on the market, this one will provide the best bang for your buck; however, keep in mind the caveats. The laptop does not have stellar battery life, it is not light, and it does tend to run hot when running on battery especially. This laptop is for serious gamers, and those who cannot bring a desktop PC to college.
